Located on top of a post-tensioned concrete parking structure, this $34-million, 48,770-sq-ft athletic complex features a full-size basketball court, locker rooms, support spaces for the neighboring aquatic center, classrooms and administrative spaces.
Since the project sits between the school’s main campus and an existing field house, the team had to guide student movement across the active jobsite using a temporary, elevated pedestrian walkway that allowed students to safely get from one area to another.
Ensuring the correct floor buildup was essential so the new space would meet exterior elevations and align with the existing post-tensioned slab’s weight restrictions. But the structure was not square, and the anticipated points of connection did not align with the new building layout.
So the team performed detailed mapping and scanning to identify the PT tendons for all points of connection and piping penetrations through the slabs to ensure proper alignment.
The design finalization for a feature stone donor wall was delayed and required material from an Italian quarry. The project team coordinated with the supplier to ensure materials arrived ahead of the project’s completion in September 2024.
